This month I had the chance to take a personal trip to LA with my 13-year-old daughter and her friend and I brought the girls to Rodeo Drive.

The girls were amazed with the size of the shops, the well-decorated shopping windows and the amazing designs displayed in the stores.

As we walked along from shop to shop, my daughter’s friend had a very specific request; “Can we go into Chanel please”, she asked very politely. “I have been drawing some of their dresses and I would love to see them in real life,” she continued.

We walked into Chanel, giving the girls plenty of time to look at the designs, feel the fabrics and compare her drawings to the real thing (she had brought her sketch book with her).

As we got into the car, the conversation continued around this 13 year old’s fashion career. The girls spent the afternoon talking about how her stores would look like, should her brand be named after her last name or not. Would she be designing wedding gowns; formal wear; ready to wear?

It was fascinating to listen to their conversation and it made me think of the beginning of all dreams.

This young girl was beginning to dream a career in fashion and she was able to visualize how her brand would look like and how she would go about making all this happen. Her voice reflecting the excitement of her dream, her whole being energized by the possibilities.

I can’t help to make a parallel between this experience and the work I do with my clients.

One of the issues I experience in my work is clients who have lost the capacity to formulate their dreams, their desires. As we grow older, our dreams become more real, down to earth, smaller and less challenging. The causes for this are many, frustration, past failures, the need to cover basic needs, responsibility, lack of self-confidence, you name it.

So, how do we reconnect with our dreams?

Here are some three simple ways to start reconnecting with your dreams.

• Journaling: if you kept a journal as a child, dig it out from the back of your closet and take a journey back in time.
• Pay attention: Look at your week ahead, what, of all the things you have in your schedule are you most looking forward to?
• Write it down: Make a list of all the things you LOVE to do and would do for free (don’t worry, you don’t need to do anything for free)

Personally, finding my new career as a strategist and coach began when I realized I had veered off so far from my dreams that I found myself stuck, unhappy and unfulfilled. Reconnecting with myself gave me the CLARITY I needed to begin taking baby steps towards my dream life.
